the Leatherstocking Tales [the Leatherstocking Tales]
a series of five novels by the US writer James Fenimore Cooper. They follow the life of Natty Bumppo, an 18th-century ↑frontiersman. He first appears in The Pioneers (1823) and then (called Hawkeye) in ↑Last of the Mohicans (1826) and (as the Old Trapper) in The Prairie (1827). The other two novels are The Pathfinder (1840) and The Deerslayer (1841).
